 Madam Director,

Cases of  torture and abuse of Galgos (hunting sighthounds) in Spain are estimated at 50, 60000 each year.  Many European citizens are deeply shocked by the farming conditions of detention of these greyhounds that are registered 500000 in the Spanish federations of Galgos. On top of this official figure it is estimated that 250.000 Galgos are born each year : births without traceability, non compliance with the European legislation  on animal welfare and european environmental and health standards, thousands of photos and videos showing the mutilated animals, lives cut short, champions locked in “zulos”, underground reinforced concrete, where they live chained. After the season of hunting and as soon as their performance declines, they are hanged, burnt, thrown dying on mass graves, put to death in perreras.

To which must be added the Podencos, greyhounds so-called “primitive”' whose fate is still worse.

We call upon UNESCO to reject any application for registration to Intangible Cultural Heritage (P.C.I.) of any activity generating abuse and torture of greyhounds, including hunting with Galgos and Podencos in Spain.
