Tomorrow, 8 May, by 5pm the movement for the total abolition of bullfighting in Portugal is going to be received by the Prime Minister of Portugal in a private meeting, at the headquarters of the Portuguese Government, the Palace of S. Bento.

This is a very significant date for Portugal, as for the very first time the bullfighting abolition movement is going to be heard by the Portuguese political power at the highest level, in a country where clearly the great majority of the population does not identify with and does not like bullfighting, for their violent nature and for the tremendous suffering the animals are submitted to.

It should be mentioned that in Portugal, although the bull is not killed in the arena, the fact is that it remains in a horrible agony for two to three days after the bullfight, waiting to be slaughtered. A chocking situation that is kept away from the eyes of the public and that make of Portuguese bullfights a much crueller event than the Spanish corridas.

The private meeting with the Portuguese Prime Minister follows from an unprecedented initiative launched by the Portuguese Government in the beginning of the year to identify the most popular cause in the Country. Voting in the different causes created by the citizens was made through the internet Portal of the Government (http://www.portugal.gov.pt/) and during 4 months more than 16.000 citizens participated in the initiative and over 1,000 different causes were created. More than half of the participants voted in the "Abolition of Bullfighting" as the main cause to be received by the Prime Minister clearly showing that this is really a great desire of the Portuguese people.

The bullfighting abolition movement was created by a 37 year old Portuguese journalist, Sérgio Caetano who considers that "this movement wants to contribute towards the civilizational advancement of the Portuguese society, towards a more peaceful society, and towards valuing other entertaining traditional practices in the country, which is quite rich in all sorts of peaceful popular festivals".

COMMUNIQUÉ DE PRESSE:

Demain, Mardi 8 mai 2012, vers les 17h00, le Mouvement qui défend l'abolition des corridas au Portugal (MATP) sera reçu en audience privée par le Premier Ministre du Portugal, chez le "Palácio de S. Bento", siège du gouvernement Portugais.

Il s'agit donc d'une date très importante et signifiante, car c'est la première fois que le mouvement abolitionniste de la tauromachie au Portugal sera écouté par le pouvoir politique portugais, dans un pays où clairement la plupart de la population n'aime pas les spéctacles des corridas ni s'en identifie à cause du caractère violent de ces evénements qui provoquent une immense souffrance aux animaux.

On doit aussi référer qu'au Portugal, les taureaux utilisés dans les corridas ne sont pas morts à l'arène restant un ou même deux jours agonisant en souffrance profonde après les corridas, en attendant son entrée dans l'abattoir où seront finalement abattus. C'est evidémment une situation choquante pas visible aux yeux publiques mais qui fait des corridas portugaises un evénement bien plus cruel que les corridas en Espagne. 

Cette audience survient comme conséquence d'une initiative inédite du Gouvernement portugais pour élire la cause actuelle plus populaire dans le pays. La votation, disponible dans le Site d' internet du Gouvernement (http://www.portugal.gov.pt/) a comptée avec la participation de plus de 16.000 citoyens et il y en avait plus de 1.000 causes différentes. Plus de la moitié des participants ont choisi et voté l' "Abolition des Corridas" pour être reçu par le Premier Ministre comme démonstration très claire que ce sujet correspond à un grand désir de la société portugaise. 

Le responsable pour cette "pétition" concernant le mouvement abolitioniste des corridas est un journaliste de 37 ans, Sérgio Caetano, qui considère que ce "mouvement prétend contribuer pour le progrès civilisé de la société portugaise, pour la pacification et la valorisation d'autres pratiques de fête, ludiques et pacifiques qui arrivent au Portugal".
